Healthwork offers a national employee counselling service which is focussed on issues that affect an employee’s ability to function well at work. Healthwork’s national network of counsellors are chartered clinical psychologists and registered psychotherapists who have expertise in a range of psychological approaches. Our counsellors aim to equip the employee with the coping strategies to aid their recovery, resume work at the earliest appropriate juncture, and reduce the risk of recurrence of similar illness.
We are able to take referrals nationally, and employees will be seen on premises as close to their home address as possible.
Research studies of workplace counselling suggests that counselling interventions have a significant and positive impact on job commitment, work functioning, job satisfaction and substance misuse. Studies have shown that effective counselling provisions in the workplace could reduce employee sickness absence rates by 25% – 50%. Source: (McLeod, J. Counselling in the Workplace: The Facts. A Systematic Study of the Research Evidence, BACP, 2001)
Counselling has been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. It is an intervention that can be utilised as a powerful tool to reduce the frequency and duration of sickness absence caused by mental health illness in addition to helping prevent serious problems developing. Counselling is also helpful for employees with long-term physical problems, such as chronic back pain, as the emotional impact of prolonged pain and impairment increases the risk of both societal and workplace disability.
Healthwork’s counselling provision includes:
• Ad-hoc referrals or a package that is integrated with existing employee wellbeing services
• Confidential, professional and timely problem assessment
• Short-term counselling, initially of up to 6 sessions of one hour duration. It is anticipated that in most circumstances this will be sufficient. The 5th or 6th session will include a review on the basis of which further sessions may be offered, preferably in ‘blocks’ of three, with a review at the end of each block. However, the offer of sessions beyond the first 6 will be subject to approval by appropriate administrative section of the company (e.g. Human Resources)
• Counselling within the Ethical Framework and Standards of Practice of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This stipulates that counselling should be practised under appropriate supervision and consultation
• Record keeping, Evaluation and Audit
• Appropriate non-personal feedback to the client company through agreed channels, including suggested referral for longer term assistance where necessary.
